Wat Ratchaburana was constructed under the reign of King Boromrachathirat II (King Sam Praya) of Ayutthaya Kingdom in 1424. The purpose was to place the bodies for the cremation of Chao Ai Phraya and Chao See Phraya who were his brother. They both died on the elephant’s back while fighting over the father’s property. In addition, the two Pagodas (Chedi) were built in memories of the two princes.

Then 60 years ago the Fine Arts Department has found the valuable stuff over 2,000 pieces, 100 kg of gold and the Buddha image. It was a rumor once thief stole most of the treasure and then there was something went wrong with them like had severe injure, die, or brought them bad luck. Eventually, the police have found out and arrested them. All treasures are displayed in the Chao Sam Phraya National Museum. It was a talk of a town that this temple is mysterious because there is no clue why those thieves had something bad happened to them after stealing. It might be karma for doing a bad thing.

Nowadays, only some part has remained after Burmese burndown most of it.

Wat Ratchaburana opens daily from 8 am until 5 pm.
